KUALA LUMPUR, March 2 — Bukit Gasing assemblyperson Rajiv Rishyakaran has partnered with The Hive Bulk Foods and DAP Wanita Petaling Jaya to promote reusable menstrual products.

Rajiv’s “Make The Switch Now!” campaign with the zero-waste store encourages women to use reusable pads or menstrual cups, instead of disposable sanitary pads when they are going through their menses.

In a post on his Facebook page about the campaign, Rajiv explained the environmental and economic benefits of making the switch.

A single person who menstruates will use between 5,000 and 15,000 disposable pads, all of which will end up as waste at a landfill.

He also pointed out that in Malaysia, an average pack of 16 disposable sanitary pads costs RM10. Over a period of seven years, a person would have spent RM840 on disposable sanitary pads.

“These reusable products, on the other hand, can last you between seven and 10 years,” said Rajiv.

The Make The Switch Now! Campaign will kick off at Taman Jaya Public Park on March 6. The public will get to learn more about reusable menstrual products at the event. Those who join the campaign will get an exclusive subsidy of three reusable pads or one menstrual cup for RM25.
