KUALA LUMPUR, Feb 21 – The Ministry of Health (MOH) has recorded 18,277 Covid-19 cases, including 191 fatalities, among pregnant women in Malaysia as of last month.

Health director-general Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah said today that all 191 deaths from Covid-19 complications occurred last year.

About 79 per cent of the pregnant Covid-19 victims who died from the virus were not vaccinated, while 83 per cent of the fatalities had underlying health conditions.

This year, as of February 15, no Covid-19 death has been reported among pregnant women.

“High vaccine coverage (94.7 per cent) among those aged 18 years and older was achieved in October 2021. This contributed to the decline of deaths among pregnant mothers from Covid-19 complications,” Dr Noor Hisham tweeted.

According to a chart he shared, Covid-19 infections among pregnant women peaked in August last year, similar to the overall trend in the general population.

Last August, nearly 4,000 pregnant women were infected with the coronavirus.
