KUALA LUMPUR, July 26 – From 2018 to May 2024, the Royal Malaysian Police (PDRM) opened investigation papers on a total of 7,727 cases related to child sexual crimes.
Out of these figure, 1,954 cases are under investigation, no further action (NFA) was taken on 1,550 cases, and 4,223 cases were charged in court.
These figures were provided by Azalina Othman Said, Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Law and Institutional Reform) in a written parliamentary reply last July 16.
She was responding to Bukit Bendera MP, Syerleena Abdul Rashid, who asked for the number of child sexual crime cases from 2018 to 2023 in a tabular format including the outcomes, whether NFA was taken, cases are currently under investigation, complaints were withdrawn, and cases that were charged in court.
In her response, Azalina said that based on the statistics provided by the Chief Registrar of the Federal Court (PKPMP), the number of cases registered in the courts related to child sexual crime cases in 2018 until 2023 are as follows:
Earlier this week on Tuesday, the Dewan Negara passed the the Sexual Offences Against Children (Amendment) Bill 2024.
