KUALA LUMPUR, Dec 30 – Malaysia recorded a total of 4,502 cases of AIDS and HIV in 2023, consisting of 1,282 cases (28.5 per cent) of AIDS and 2,841 (71.5 per cent) cases of HIV, according to the Statistics on Women Empowerment in Selected Domains 2024 report by the Department of Statistics Malaysia (DOSM).
There were a higher number of cases of AIDS and HIV among men, constituting 1,166 cases (91 per cent) of AIDS and 2,890 cases of HIV (89.8 per cent).
In comparison, women made up 116 cases (9.0 per cent) of AIDS and 330 cases (10.2 per cent) of HIV.
The state with the highest number of AIDS cases in 2023 was Sarawak with 302 cases, followed by Johor with 242 cases and Wilayah Persekutuan Kuala Lumpur with 149 cases.
Meanwhile, the highest number of HIV cases were recorded in Selangor with 1,062 cases, followed by Wilayah Persekutuan Kuala Lumpur with 353 cases and Sabah with 320 cases.
The number of individuals living with HIV who received treatment were higher among women (95 per cent) compared to men (63 per cent) in 2023.
HIV And AIDS In The 0-19 Age Group
According to DOSM’s Children Statistics Malaysia 2024 report, there were 149 new cases of HIV and AIDS in the 0 to19 age group in 2023, comprising 125 cases of HIV and 24 cases of AIDS.
There were a higher number of males with HIV (116) and AIDS (21) than females in that age group. Females constituted nine cases of HIV and three cases of AIDS.
In the under-13 age group, there were six cases of boys with HIV and two cases of boys with AIDS. Among girls in the same category, there were two cases of girls with HIV and one case of a girl with AIDS.
In the 13 to 19 age group, there were 110 cases of males with HIV and 19 cases of males with AIDS. Among girls in the same category, there were 7 cases of girls with HIV and two cases of a girl with AIDS.
