KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 18 — Sunway Medical Centre (SMC) will host a World Heart Day 2025 celebration on Saturday, September 27, 2025, from 9.00am to 1.00pm at the Sunway Medical Centre Convention Centre, Level 4, Tower A, bringing together health care professionals, patients, and the wider community in a joint effort to increase understanding of cardiovascular health, prevention, and early intervention.
Cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) remain the leading cause of mortality globally. Conditions like coronary artery disease, hypertension, and heart failure–all part of CVDs–are often silent until they become life-threatening.
The World Health Organization (WHO) reported that 19.8 million people died from CVDs in 2022, accounting for 32 per cent of global deaths, with heart attacks and strokes contributing to the majority.
In Malaysia, the Ministry of Health (MOH) recorded 66,779 CVD-related deaths in 2021, underscoring the urgent need for greater public awareness on risk factors, prevention, and early detection.
In line with the global World Heart Day movement, SMC’s initiative seeks to open its door to the public with access to education, screenings, and inspiring real-life patient experiences.
Consultant cardiologist Dr Richard Chan and consultant cardiologist and electrophysiologist Dr Gary Lee, with their extensive expertise in the management of coronary artery disease, hypertension, heart failure, will lead awareness sessions with a focus on prevention, lifestyle changes, and monitoring of vascular health indicators such as blood pressure, heart rate, and oxygen levels.
The event will also feature patient testimonials from beneficiaries of the Skim Jantung Negeri Selangor programme, who will share their treatment and recovery journeys at SMC.
In addition, an automated external defibrillator (AED) and emergency response workshop will provide attendees with essential skills to respond effectively during cardiac emergencies.
Complementing these sessions are interactive wellness booths, complimentary health screenings, and a demonstration by Samsung Malaysia on the role of wearable technology in monitoring heart health.
These activities aim to enrich the event by enabling attendees to better understand cardiovascular risk factors and explore practical tools for daily self-monitoring.
“Heart disease is not just a statistic, it is a reality for countless families in Malaysia and around the world.
“With greater awareness and preventive actions, many of these lives can be protected. World Heart Day is about reminding us to listen to our hearts–literally and figuratively–and to make health a priority,” said Tan Mei Shin, SMC Senior Director of Business Development and Corporate Communications.
SMC has been recognised as one of the top 250 hospitals globally in Newsweek World’s Best Hospitals and has ranked among the top 75 in cardiology and cardiac surgery in Newsweek’s Best Specialized Hospitals Asia Pacific in 2024 and 2025, reflecting its sustained excellence in specialised cardiovascular care.
