KUALA LUMPUR, April 30 – Nancy Shukri, Minister of Women, Family and Community Development, has released a statement this morning urging everyone to speak out against sexual harassment following an incident involving an e-hailing driver and a 15-year-old girl.
According to the minister, a video that has gone viral shows the driver asking the victim to remove her hijab while on the way home.
Nancy commended the victim’s father for taking action by getting the police involved.
“This reflects increasing public awareness of the issue of sexual harassment, which should not be taken lightly,” she said.
According to the minister, the case is currently under investigation by the police.
Nancy called on all parties to speak out against sexual harassment in order to defend the dignity and safety of society.
“To the teenagers out there, do not remain silent. You have the right to act for your safety and dignity,” she said.
The minister said she was also committed to empowering justice through the full implementation of the Tribunal under the Sexual Harassment Act.
“I also urge everyone–women, men, parents, educators, and colleagues–to work together to build a safer and more dignified environment, by courageously speaking out when facing or witnessing any form of sexual harassment, especially in an effort to protect children and women,” she concluded.
