The recent series of incidents in Kelantan involving the rape and sexual exploitation of underage girls is deeply alarming. The actions of the perpetrators are abhorrent and must be condemned.
These disturbing cases reveal not only the erosion of trust within families and workplaces, but also serious shortcomings in the protection systems for children, teenagers, and women in Malaysia.
According to reports, two of the cases involved 13- and 14-year-old girls who were repeatedly abused by their biological fathers and uncles. The perpetrators hid their crimes behind familial ties, shamelessly violating both legal and moral boundaries.
Meanwhile, the third case involved a police officer who, upon inspecting his daughter’s phone, discovered explicit conversations that indicated she had been taken advantage of online. This points to another alarming reality of exploitation through digital platforms.
It must be emphasised that these incidents reflect both a decline in moral values within the family unit and a failure of national structures meant to protect minors.
Even more concerning is the fact that the cases came to light only through police campaigns on TikTok, or by sheer luck.
This highlights the lack of effective sex education within Malaysia, and the weaknesses of our current monitoring systems, which leave victims vulnerable, isolated, and often without a voice.
Wanita MCA urges the government to raise public awareness surrounding pornography and sexual crimes, and to strengthen both preventive and punitive measures, particularly in relation to the protection of underage girls and the implementation of comprehensive sex education.
Among these could be:
Legal Measures
- Enforce harsher penalties for the sexual abuse of minors and online sexual offences.
- Expedite judicial processes to ensure timely access to justice for victims.
- Broaden the scope of existing child protection laws to include online grooming and non-physical forms of harassment.
Family and Education Measures
- Promote digital parenting education to help parents identify signs of online sexual grooming.
- Introduce structured and age-appropriate sex education in schools to equip students with self-protection awareness.
Social And Media Measures
- Require media outlets and social platforms to improve monitoring systems to actively combat the spread of pornography.
- Encourage community organisations to conduct talks and workshops on legal rights and personal safety.
The police must thoroughly investigate all related cases, while the government must ensure inter-agency collaboration in establishing a comprehensive framework based on prevention, detection, intervention, and legal punishment.
Only through the development of a strong and cohesive safety and protection system can we effectively reduce the prevalence of sexual violence to create a safer and more dignified environment for future generations.
